Trina Thompson, 27, of the Bronx, graduated from New York’s Monroe College in April with a bachelor of business administration degree in information technology.
On July 24, she filed suit against the college in Bronx Supreme Court, alleging that Monroe’s “Office of Career Advancement did not help me with a full-time job placement. I am also suing them because of the stress I have been going through.”
Part of me sympathizes with her. Growing up lower-middle class our parents made us believe that a college education and degree was a guarantee to “success”. Like believing in Santa Claus. There are probably thousands of people, to throw a number out there, that don’t find a job in what they studied. That’s ok. You don’t need a degree to get a job right? We can always find a job at Wal-Mart or something. But man, paying that monthly Sallie Mae loan really fucking hurts, not just because of financial reasons, but because it’s a constant reminder of how you been duped by the “american dream”.
All I can say is welcome to the real word Trina Thompson. Good look finding a pro bono attorney.
